Eczema (atopic dermatitis) is a chronic skin condition usually caused by allergies.

  • Intense itching
  • Redness or rash
  • Blisters with oozing or crusting
  • Dry skin
  • Areas of bumpy skin
  • Inflammed or irritated skin

Causes and Diagnosis

The cause of eczema is unknown although it is thought to be linked to the body's immune system overreacting to an irritant or allergen. Eczema can be diagnosed by medical physicians, dermatologist or allergist. Allergy testing may be suggested to determine allergens and triggers.

Corticosteroid creams and lotions are prescribed to treat eczema and relieve and prevent itching, which can lead to infection. These creams help keep the skin moist.
