Things to know if you are interested in participating in research:

Clinical trials are tests of medical treatments to see if they are safe and if they work. As a potential research subject, you should be aware that there are rewards and risks associated with participation. The FDA distributes a pamphlet entitled "Why Volunteer? Clinical Trials of Medical Treatments".

Before participating in any trial or study, you should:

1. Be adequately informed of the study and be given an opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

2. Know that participation is voluntary and that you may withdraw participation at any time.

3. Understand and sign an informed consent agreement - a document that gives detailed information about the study.
