Occupational Exposure

The work environment can pose serious allergy threats. Office buildings tend to harbor indoor allergens from printing machines, latex, cleaning solvents, and even the company plants. Some people change professions due to severe allergic reactions to common occupational necessities like the printer cartridges. Others must relocate their desk away from the windows or office machinery. For some compensating is as simple as adjusting their allergy medications or switching to a different brand of cleaner. Everyone interacts with his or her environment differently.

Due to the fickle nature of allergies, a person could develop new allergies to substances that did had not caused allergy symptoms previously; or one may find that he or she only reacts to certain substances after prolonged exposure. This prolonged exposure can vary between a few hours to a few months. Most employees have little control over their work environment. They cannot check the air filters or avoid encountering certain allergens. In the case of some asthmatics, they might not find a way to reduce strenuous activity.

If your occupational surroundings cause hives, rashes, a cough or restricted breathing, discuss your symptoms and work environment with your physician. An Alabama Allergy asthma and allergy specialists can assess the severity of your symptoms, investigate the source of your occupational allergy, and work with you to construct an action plan. Before your visit, please review the questions on our assessment quiz. The questions listed are the same questions most patients encounter on their first doctors visit.
